Mt. Monadnock via White Dot Trail — October 2021 Summit Report

Monadnock in early October is the quintessential New England autumn mountain day. The White Dot Trail climbs steeply through a tunnel of red and orange hardwoods before the forest abruptly ends and bare granite takes over. The summit is a wide, open dome — one of the most satisfying exposed summits in the northeastern United States for the effort invested. We sat in windless sunshine for an hour, watching the foliage colour extend to every horizon. One of the most-climbed mountains on Earth, and absolutely worth the crowds.

Difficulty Assessment

The White Dot Trail is short (3.2 km one-way) but steep, gaining 600m through hardwood forest before emerging on the open granite summit dome. The bare rock requires route-finding from cairn to cairn in poor visibility. The mountain's popularity means the main hazard is parking and crowds, not the terrain.
