Mount Kenya via Nelion Peak — February 2023 Summit Report¶

Mount Kenya's technical peaks offer world-class alpine climbing on the equator. The Nelion Peak ascent via the Normal Route is a multi-pitch rock climb with stunning views of the Lewis Glacier and surrounding Afroalpine moorlands. The equatorial location means consistent weather patterns — climb early, be down before the storms.

Conditions¶

Weather: Dry season conditions with morning fog clearing by 10 AM. Afternoon thunderstorms built reliably after 2 PM, requiring early starts. Snow: Remnant ice on the Diamond Couloir, otherwise dry rock. Temperature: -5°C to 15°C Wind: Light morning winds, gusty with afternoon storms

Difficulty Assessment¶

Nelion Peak is a serious technical climb — Grade IV rock with exposure. The approach through Mackinder's Valley is straightforward trekking, but the summit day involves 15 pitches of climbing on volcanic rock. A rappel across the Gate of the Mists connects Nelion to Batian.
