Gran Paradiso via Normal Route — September 2024 Summit Report

September on Gran Paradiso offers something July doesn't: solitude. Fewer teams, consolidated glacier, and stable autumn air. The classic ascent from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II follows a well-worn glacier path to Italy's highest point (4,061m). The final rock ridge to the Madonna statue summit is memorable — exposed and narrow with the Aosta Valley far below. Ibex on the glacier approach make this one of the Alps' most memorable mornings.

Difficulty Assessment

Italy's highest entirely-national peak is the classic 'first 4,000er'. The glacier approach and final rock ridge demand rope team and crampon proficiency. September's consolidated conditions are arguably better than July-August.
