Everest via South Col — May 2024 Summit Report

Fifty-five days from Kathmandu to the summit of the world. The Khumbu Icefall on rotation days never becomes routine — seracs calve, ladders shift, and the math of exposure is always running. Camp 2, Camp 3, and then the South Col at 7,920m with 8,849m visible above. Summit day: -28°C at the Hillary Step, 15 km/h wind, and a pre-monsoon window that closes within hours of descent. Standing at 8,849m and understanding every meter below that took 55 days to earn.

Conditions

Weather: Standard pre-monsoon window. Summit day: -28°C, 15 km/h wind — excellent for Everest. Supplemental oxygen above Camp 3. Jet stream lifted 3 days earlier than forecast, giving a clean window. Snow: South Col in poor condition (wind-scoured), Balcony approach in good condition, Hillary Step manageable Temperature: -28°C to 15°C Wind: 15 km/h on summit — an exceptional day on an 8,849m peak

Difficulty Assessment

The Khumbu Icefall remains the most objectively dangerous passage, crossed multiple times during acclimatization rotations. The Death Zone above 8,000m creates cumulative physiological decline — speed on summit day is survival. Most accidents occur on descent. Supplemental oxygen management is critical.
