Aoraki/Mt. Cook: New Zealand's highest and arguably its most demanding peak. Helicopter to Plateau Hut is standard and sensible — what follows is not. Three days waiting and watching weather systems roll through the Southern Alps before a 4-hour window opens. Linda Glacier approach to Summit Rocks requires real mixed climbing. The summit at 3,724m is Edmund Hillary's training ground, the founding moment of New Zealand mountaineering. Standing on it feels like that history.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Mount Cook (3724m) Date: January 14, 2025 Duration: 3 days Party Size: 2 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: New Zealand alpine at its finest and most capricious — four weather changes across three days. A 4-hour summit window: -8°C, light wind, outstanding Southern Alps visibility. Snow: Linda Glacier approach in excellent condition, Summit Rocks mixed rock and ice Temperature: -8°C to 12°C Wind: Light on summit during the window, deteriorating by afternoon
Difficulty Assessment¶
Despite moderate altitude (3,724m), Aoraki demands genuine alpine skills — glacier travel, mixed rock and ice, and patience waiting for weather windows at Plateau Hut. The mountain loses height from ice collapse. Speed and commitment through the Summit Rocks section are important.
