Mount Kinabalu via Via Ferrata — March 2024 Summit Report

Kinabalu is Southeast Asia's highest peak and one of the most accessible high mountains in the world. The 2-day climb from Timpohon Gate to Low's Peak crosses from tropical rainforest to granite moonscape. The 2 AM summit push on the smooth granite dome under a canopy of equatorial stars was magical. We descended via the Walk the Torq Via Ferrata — an iron ladder route across the mountain's sheer granite walls — absolutely exhilarating.

Difficulty Assessment

Borneo's highest peak is a well-organized climb with mandatory guides and a comfortable hut at 3,272m. The summit push starts at 2 AM over slick granite slabs — fixed ropes help enormously. The optional Via Ferrata descent adds a thrilling dimension.
