Island Peak (Imja Tse) — November 2023 Summit Report

Sixteen days combining the Everest Base Camp approach with a summit ascent of the Khumbu's best trekking peak. Island Peak at 6,189m uses the EBC trek for acclimatization, then demands a 2 AM headlamp start for the fixed-rope headwall. Jumar technique and crampon confidence are prerequisites. The summit reward is an unobstructed view of Lhotse's South Face that experienced climbers call one of the finest in the Himalaya. A genuine stepping stone to higher objectives.

Difficulty Assessment

Nepal's most popular trekking peak demands real alpine skills. The fixed-rope headwall is technically straightforward with jumar technique but exposed and intimidating at 2 AM. Acclimatization on the EBC approach is built into the itinerary. The summit cornice must be respected.
