Eiger via Mittellegi Ridge — July 2023 Summit Report¶

The Eiger's Mittellegi Ridge offers one of the Alps' most spectacular ridge traverses without the extreme commitment of the North Face. Starting from the Mittellegi Hut (reached via a thrilling via ferrata), the ridge twists and narrows over gendarmes and towers to the summit. The exposure is constant — the North Face drops away 1,800m to your left. The views of the Jungfrau and Mönch across the glacier are unforgettable.

Weather: Perfect summer conditions. Clear skies with distant cumulus. The Mittellegi Hut was fully booked — popularity of this route has surged in recent years. Snow: Some remnant snow patches on the north-facing aspects, mostly dry rock. Temperature: -3°C to 12°C Wind: Calm to light, 5-10 km/h

Difficulty Assessment¶

The Mittellegi Ridge is a classic knife-edge arete with exposed scrambling (AD+ grade). Fixed ropes and chains on the most exposed sections. The approach from the Eiger Glacier station via via ferrata to the Mittellegi Hut is itself a serious undertaking.
