Mount Ararat — the legendary landing place of Noah's Ark — rises dramatically from the Anatolian plain. The four-day climb from Doğubayazıt passes through Kurdish villages, high pastures, and volcanic wastelands before reaching the permanent ice cap. The summit view spans Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. Our Kurdish guides shared tea and stories at every camp — the cultural experience was as memorable as the climb.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Mount Ararat (5137m) Date: August 20, 2022 Duration: 4 days Party Size: 8 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Hot and dry at lower elevations, cold above 4,500m. Morning fog in the valley cleared by mid-morning. Summit day was perfect. Snow: Permanent ice cap above 4,800m, otherwise dry volcanic rock and scree. Temperature: -10°C to 30°C (base to summit range) Wind: Light to moderate, 10-20 km/h on exposed ridges
Difficulty Assessment¶
Turkey's highest peak is technically straightforward but physically demanding — 3,000m of gain over 4 days. The ice cap near the summit requires crampons. Military permit required and sometimes difficult to obtain. Kurdish guides are mandatory.
