Longs Peak via Keyhole Route — August 2024 Summit Report

Colorado's only Fourteener in Rocky Mountain National Park. The Keyhole Route is a rite of passage for Colorado climbers — a long approach, 1,500m of gain, and exposed Class 3 scrambling on the famous Diamond Face. The painted bull's-eyes marking the route through the mist are both reassuring and humbling. We summited at 9 AM and were back at the trailhead before the 2 PM thunderstorm — Colorado's clockwork weather.

Trip Overview

Mountain: Longs Peak (4346m) Date: August 17, 2024 Duration: 1 days Party Size: 2 Outcome: Summit

Conditions

Weather: Started under stars, summited in sunshine, descended through the inevitable afternoon thunderstorm. Classic Colorado summer pattern. Snow: Dry — late summer. All scrambling sections on solid rock. Temperature: -2°C to 15°C Wind: Light morning, increasing with afternoon storms

Difficulty Assessment

The Keyhole Route involves four distinct sections: the Boulder Field, the Ledges, the Trough, and the Narrows/Homestretch. Each presents different challenges — exposure, loose rock, route-finding. The 3 AM start is non-negotiable in summer to beat lightning.
