K2 via Abruzzi Spur — July 2023 Summit Report

Sixty days in the Karakoram for a summit that K2 grants to very few. Concordia and base camp feel like sanctuary after two weeks of watching weather systems destroy windows. The Abruzzi Spur from Camp 1 to Camp 4 is relentless technical climbing at altitude. The Bottleneck serac crossing at 8,200m is fast, focused, and silent — everyone understands what the hanging ice above them means. The summit snowfield in -35°C with 10 km/h wind is survival mountaineering at 8,611m. The Savage Mountain earns every adjective.

Difficulty Assessment

K2 demands expedition-level technical skills across the entire Abruzzi Spur — rock, ice, and mixed at altitude. The Bottleneck serac is the most feared objective hazard in Himalayan mountaineering. Speed through it is not optional. K2's summit-to-attempt ratio is among the worst of any 8,000er.
