Chimborazo via Normal Route — November 2023 Summit Report

Chimborazo — the farthest point from Earth's center thanks to the equatorial bulge — is Ecuador's highest peak and a jewel of Andean mountaineering. The midnight start from Whymper Refuge at 5,000m leads up a glacier that has retreated dramatically in recent decades. The summit views at dawn, with Cotopaxi smoking in the distance, are among the most spectacular in South America.

Trip Overview

Mountain: Chimborazo (6263m) Date: November 18, 2023 Duration: 2 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit

Conditions

Weather: Clear and extremely cold. The Whymper Refuge provided a sheltered base. Winds picked up above 6,000m but remained manageable. Snow: Hard ice on the upper glacier, some loose snow lower. Crampons and ice axes essential. Temperature: -18°C to -2°C Wind: 20-30 km/h above 6,000m

Difficulty Assessment

Despite moderate technical difficulty, Chimborazo's altitude is deceptive — the summit is the farthest point from Earth's center due to the equatorial bulge. Acclimatization is critical. The glacier has large crevasses that require careful navigation.
