The Sierra Nevada runs 650km through eastern California, rising to 4,421m at Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous US. Formed by granitic batholiths exposed by glaciation, the range contains spectacular granite walls including Yosemite's El Capitan. The High Sierra offers outstanding wilderness mountaineering.
