Nanda Devi is the highest mountain lying entirely within India, reaching 7,816 metres in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand. Ringed by a wall of high peaks that enclose the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, it was long among the most inaccessible of the great summits, and its inner basin was not entered by explorers until the 1930s. It is a Himalayan fold mountain, held sacred in regional tradition and named for a revered goddess. The site rates it grade 5, an extreme classification, and access is now tightly restricted to protect the surrounding biosphere reserve. Its guarded approaches and protected status keep climbing exceptionally rare.
