Mount Meru 4-Day Momella Route Expedition¶

Four-day Arusha National Park ascent of Tanzania's second-highest volcano — wildlife-filled rainforest, narrow crater rim ridge, and Kilimanjaro views from Socialist Peak at 4,566m.

Overview¶

Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania's second-highest peak and, while often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro 70km to the east, offers a more challenging and arguably more dramatic climb. The Momella Route ascends through Arusha National Park — where armed rangers are mandatory escorts due to wildlife — through rainforest, alpine meadow, and a spectacular narrow ridge walk on the crater rim to Socialist Peak at 4,566m. Three mountain huts provide shelter at Miriakamba, Saddle, and Rhino Point. The mountain is an ideal acclimatization ascent before Kilimanjaro, and many trekkers combine both peaks in a single trip. Kilimanjaro stands dramatically visible on clear summit mornings.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut¶

Collect armed ranger escort at Momella Gate and enter Arusha National Park. The trail passes through acacia woodland where giraffe and buffalo frequently cross the path. Above the park grasslands the route enters montane rainforest to Miriakamba Hut, with views of the Meru ash cone.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut¶

Short but steep climb through open moorland and past the Meru ash cone to Saddle Hut on the broad saddle between the crater rim peaks. Optional afternoon acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) and back. First clear Kilimanjaro views emerge from the saddle in the afternoon.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak and Return to Miriakamba¶

Midnight departure from Saddle Hut onto the narrow crater rim ridge — an exposed arete with dramatic drops into the Meru crater on one side and the outer slopes on the other. Socialist Peak at 4,566m is reached at dawn. Kilimanjaro's Kibo cone glows in the morning light. Descend fully to Miriakamba for the overnight.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate¶

Final descent through montane rainforest and acacia woodland back to Momella Gate with the armed ranger escort. Wildlife sightings are common on the descent. Exit the national park and transfer to Arusha.
