Overview¶
The Hornli Ridge is the standard route on the Matterhorn, the most recognizable peak in the Alps at 4,478m. Attempted by thousands each summer, fewer than half reach the summit — fixed ropes, exposed rock ridges, and rapidly changing weather demand solid alpine experience. Day one climbs from Zermatt to the Hornli Hut at 3,260m. Summit day follows the northeast ridge via the Solvay bivouac/" class="glossary-link" title="Emergency Bivouac">emergency bivouac to the Italian Cross, returning to Zermatt via full descent. A licensed IFMGA guide is strongly recommended.
Day 1: Zermatt to Hornli Hut¶
Take the Schwarzsee cable car to reduce the approach, then hike the moraine trail to the Hornli Hut at the base of the northeast ridge. Gear check, early dinner, and rest before a 4 AM start.
Day 2: Hornli Hut to Summit and Return to Zermatt¶
Pre-dawn departure on fixed ropes up the lower Hornli Ridge, passing the Solvay emergency hut at 4,003m. The final summit pyramid involves exposed scrambling to the Italian Cross at 4,478m. Descend the full ridge back to Zermatt before afternoon thunderstorms arrive.
