Gurla Mandhata reaches 7,694 metres in the Nalakankar Himal of the Tibet Autonomous Region, rising in relative isolation south of the sacred lakes near Mount Kailash. Its bulk stands somewhat apart from the main Himalayan chain, giving it a broad, massive presence above the high Tibetan plateau. First climbed in 1985, it is a fold mountain lifted by the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian plates. The site rates it grade 5, its most severe classification, fitting for a remote high-altitude expedition. Its position in a restricted border region and its distance from established approaches keep visits few and far between.
