Toubkal in May hits the sweet spot: retreating snow, moderate temperatures, and the High Atlas valleys blooming with wildflowers below. We based in Imlil, arranged mule logistics for luggage, and spent the first afternoon climbing to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207m. The pre-dawn summit push through the South Cirque was magnificent — loose scree giving way to snow patches as the sky lightened. The summit of North Africa's highest peak offered views deep into the Sahara to the south and the Atlantic coast to the west. Our Berber guide, Mohammed, made the whole experience richer.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Mount Toubkal (4167m) Date: May 19, 2022 Duration: 2 days Party Size: 4 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Warm and dry, 24°C in Imlil, 5°C at summit. Patchy snow above 3,800m but no crampons needed in May conditions. Excellent visibility. Snow: Patchy consolidated spring snow above 3,800m. Soft in afternoon. Temperature: 5°C to 24°C Wind: Light to moderate 10–20 km/h on the summit
Difficulty Assessment¶
The south cirque route is the standard ascent — a mix of maintained track and loose scree above the refuge. No technical gear required in May, but crampon awareness is needed as spring snow can be icy at dawn. The high altitude is the main physiological challenge.
