Kangchenjunga via Southwest Face — May 2023 Summit Report

A 45-day expedition to the world's third-highest peak via the Southwest Face. The mountain's remote approach through the Yalung Valley, massive scale, and technical upper sections make it one of the most challenging 8,000ers. Our team of 8 placed all members on the summit during an exceptional weather window. The tradition of stopping short of the true summit adds a spiritual dimension unique to Kangchenjunga.

Difficulty Assessment

Technically demanding with mixed rock-ice sections above 8,000m. The traverse from Camp 4 to the summit ridge is exposed and requires absolute concentration. We honored the tradition of stopping 1m below the true summit out of respect for Sikkimese beliefs.
