At 4,095m, Mount Kinabalu is the highest peak in Borneo and Southeast Asia outside of the Himalayas. The standard 2-day itinerary ascends from Timpohon Gate (1,866m) through six distinct vegetation zones — from lowland rainforest to alpine meadow and bare granite slabs — to overnight at Laban Rata Resthouse at 3,272m. A 2 AM summit push crosses the spectacular granite plateau to Low's Peak at 4,095m for a dawn panorama above the cloud sea. Day 1: Timpohon Gate to Laban Rata Resthouse¶
Register at Kinabalu Park HQ and take the shuttle to Timpohon Gate. Ascend well-marked steps through montane forest, pitcher plant zones, and mossy heath to the granite slab zone. Laban Rata provides heated dormitories and hot meals. Lights out by 7 PM for the early summit start.
Day 2: Laban Rata to Low's Peak Summit and Return¶
Depart at 2 AM along fixed ropes across the granite plateau. The final 200m to Low's Peak is a steep granite scramble aided by ropes. Dawn panoramas stretch across Borneo and the South China Sea. Descend fully to Timpohon Gate and transfer back to the park headquarters.
