Mount Damavand via South Route — September 2021 Summit Report¶
Damavand is an iconic volcano rising above Tehran. The south route from Camp 3 (4,200m) is a direct scree grind to the sulfurous summit crater. The mountain features prominently in Persian mythology and literature. Iranian mountaineering culture is warm and welcoming — we were invited to share food at every rest stop. The hot springs at the base provided perfect post-climb recovery.

Difficulty Assessment¶
The Middle East's highest peak is a volcanic slog — technically easy but exhausting on loose scree. The sulfuric fumes near the summit can cause nausea and headaches. The altitude is surprisingly challenging given the non-technical nature of the climb.
