Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain in the world at 8,126 metres, marks the western anchor of the Himalaya in northern Pakistan, where the range drops abruptly toward the Indus River. Its southern Rupal Face rises roughly 4,600 metres from base to summit, the highest mountain face on Earth. The peak is a fold mountain thrust up along the Himalayan front. The site rates it grade 5, its most severe tier, and a long record of avalanches and storms on its enormous faces earned it the grim epithet “Killer Mountain” during the early attempts of the twentieth century. It stands in isolation at the range's far northwestern limit.
