Mt. Teide via Teleferico and Summit Permit — April 2024 Summit Report¶

Spain's highest peak is a study in accessibility — the Teide cable car whisks you from 2,356m to 3,555m in minutes — but the permitted summit zone above the cable car station is something else entirely. The free online permit (secured two weeks in advance) grants access to the final volcanic cone. We picked our way through yellow sulphur crystals and fumarole vents to the highest point in Spain and the Atlantic islands. Below, the Canary Islands spread across the Atlantic like stepping stones. The sulfur smell was strong but not overwhelming. An unambiguously memorable summit for minimal effort.

Difficulty Assessment¶

The cable car eliminates the main physical challenge. The final 163m from the cable car station to the summit require a free permit (limited to 200 daily) and involve loose volcanic scree on a clear but exposed path. Altitude awareness is needed — many visitors experience mild symptoms.
