Kilimanjaro via Lemosho Route — January 2025 Summit Report¶

An 8-day Lemosho traverse ends in a hard-earned lesson at Stella Point. The route is Kilimanjaro at its most scenic — the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and Barranco Wall delivered everything promised. Summit night told a different story: -20°C with 40 km/h sustained wind. Turnaround at 5,756m was the right call. What the mountain teaches about preparation, patience, and accepting its decision is worth more than a summit photo.

Conditions¶

Weather: Mixed conditions — rain in forest zone, beautiful on Shira Plateau, severe wind at Lava Tower. Summit night: -20°C, sustained 40 km/h winds. Cold front brought unusually harsh conditions forcing turnaround at Stella Point. Snow: Light snow and ice above 5,400m, refrozen scree on summit approach Temperature: -20°C to 22°C Wind: Sustained 40 km/h with gusts to 60 km/h on summit night

Difficulty Assessment¶

Non-technical but the 8-day Lemosho itinerary provides superior acclimatization. Summit night conditions were exceptional — a cold front pushed the turnaround even with thorough preparation.
