Masherbrum, at 7,821 metres, dominates the Masherbrum Mountains, a southern subrange of the Karakoram in Pakistan, and once served as the original “K1” in the survey that later numbered K2. It throws up steep, technical faces above the Hushe valley and was first climbed in 1960. A Karakoram fold peak, it is graded 5 by the site, its most severe classification, reflecting demanding mixed climbing at altitude. Though lower than the Baltoro giants to its north, it is a serious and infrequently attempted mountain, better known to specialists than to the wider climbing public who flock to its taller neighbours.
