عرض الجبل →Mount Stanley (5,109m) in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda holds Margherita Peak, the third-highest point in Africa. The Kilembe trail is Uganda's primary approach, penetrating the afro-alpine ecosystem of giant heather, lobelia, and groundsel forests that make the Rwenzoris unlike any other mountain range on earth. The route involves five nights in mountain huts and one summit camp, with glacier travel on the upper Stanley Plateau requiring crampons, rope, and ice axe. A licensed Rwenzori Mountaineering Services guide and UWA park permits are mandatory. The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and carries a deserved reputation for technical difficulty and extreme wetness — waterproof gear and gaiters are critical.

Mount Stanley 7-Day Margherita Peak via Kilembe Route¶
Seven-day technical expedition through the Rwenzori 'Mountains of the Moon' to Margherita Peak — glacier travel, giant lobelias, and Africa's third-highest summit at 5,109m.
Overview¶
Mount Stanley (5,109m) in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda holds Margherita Peak, the third-highest point in Africa.
Day 1: Kilembe to Sine Hut¶
Register at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services office in Kilembe and begin the approach through tropical forest along the Nyamwamba River valley. The trail climbs steadily through mixed forest and bamboo zones to Sine Hut, the first mountain hut on the route. Rain is likely; gaiters and waterproof layers are needed from the first day.
Day 2: Sine Hut to Mutinda Hut¶
The trail enters the iconic afro-alpine zone of giant heather trees draped in Old Man's Beard lichen. Boggy moorland sections require careful footing. Mutinda Hut offers a small wood-burning stove and views across the Rwenzori ridges through the cloud.
Day 3: Mutinda Hut to Elena Hut¶
Ascend through the legendary giant groundsel (Senecio) and giant lobelia zone — plants found nowhere else on Earth at this scale. The trail becomes rockier above 4,000m. Elena Hut sits at the edge of the Stanley Plateau glaciers and provides the last shelter before the technical summit section.
Day 4: Elena Hut to Margherita Peak and Return¶
Pre-dawn departure with crampons, harness, and ice axe. Cross the Stanley Plateau glacier on fixed ropes to the Stanley-Speke col, then climb the final snow slopes to Margherita Peak at 5,109m — Africa's third-highest point. Return to Elena Hut for a second night.
Day 5: Elena Hut to Mutinda Hut¶
Descend through the giant groundsel forest back to Mutinda Hut. The descent reveals new perspectives on the alien afro-alpine landscape in reverse. Afternoon clouds typically bring rain; waterproofs on at all times.
Day 6: Mutinda Hut to Sine Hut¶
Continue the descent through boggy moorland and giant heather forest back to Sine Hut. Final evening in the Rwenzoris — guides typically share stories of the mountain's history and traditions around the hut stove.
Day 7: Sine Hut to Kilembe¶
Final descent through tropical forest to Kilembe, completing the full traverse of the Rwenzori ecosystem. Return gear, settle tips with guides and porters, and collect the summit certificate from Rwenzori Mountaineering Services.
