Mount Elbrus 5-Day South Route Expedition¶

A 5-day non-technical but high-altitude ascent of Europe's highest peak via the cable-car-assisted South Route with Barrel Huts acclimatization.

Overview¶

The South Route on Mount Elbrus is the most accessible path to the twin-summited 5,642m highest peak in Europe. A gondola and chairlift system from Azau (2,350m) carry climbers to the Barrel Huts at 3,800m, dramatically shortening the approach. Three acclimatization days prepare teams for the long summit push to the West Summit via Pastukhov Rocks and the saddle. Non-technical but requiring crampons and ice axes on summit day.

Day 1: Azau to Barrel Huts via Cable Car¶

Take the Azau gondola and chairlift to 3,800m and settle into the Barrel Huts — distinctive barrel-shaped metal cabins offering heat, beds, and meals. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing with short walks on the lower slopes.

Day 2: Acclimatization Hike to Pastukhov Rocks¶

Walk high to Pastukhov Rocks at 4,700m for acclimatization, then return to the Barrels for the night — the classic walk high, sleep low protocol. Crampons may be needed on hard snow.

Day 3: Rest Day at Barrel Huts¶

Full rest day at the Barrel Huts. Monitor weather forecasts and prepare gear for the summit attempt. Hydrate aggressively and eat calorie-dense food to fuel the summit push.

Day 4: Summit Day — Barrels to West Summit and Return¶

Depart at 2 AM by snowcat or on foot to Pastukhov Rocks, then continue past the saddle between the twin summits to the West Summit at 5,642m. Return before afternoon storms reach the slopes.

Day 5: Barrel Huts to Azau via Cable Car¶

Pack up at the Barrel Huts and descend by chairlift and gondola back to Azau in the valley. Celebrate with a hot meal in Terskol and transfer to Mineralnye Vody airport.
