Dhaulagiri via Northeast Ridge — October 2021 Summit Report¶

An autumn attempt on Dhaulagiri's northeast ridge — less crowded than spring but with narrower weather windows and colder temperatures. The 'White Mountain' lived up to its name with stunning views of the Kali Gandaki gorge, the deepest in the world, stretching below us. All seven team members reached the summit on October 2, making it one of the most successful Dhaulagiri expeditions of the season.

Conditions¶

Weather: Autumn season offered a brief but usable window. Clear skies on summit day with cold temperatures. The northeast ridge was mostly free of technical snow but extremely cold. Snow: Minimal snow on the ridge, wind-scoured ice. Deep snow in the French Couloir approach. Temperature: -35°C to -20°C Wind: 15-25 km/h, calm by 8,000m standards

Difficulty Assessment¶

The northeast ridge is a long, exposed traverse with limited protection. The French Couloir approach to the ridge is avalanche-prone. Camp 3 to summit is a grueling 12-hour push with no viable intermediate camp.
