Dhaulagiri (8167m)

Rising to 8,167 metres in north-central Nepal, Dhaulagiri is the seventh-highest mountain in the world and the towering high point of the Dhaulagiri Himal. Its name derives from Sanskrit for “White Mountain,” a reference to the vast snowfields cloaking its southern and western faces. It is a Himalayan fold peak, and the deep Kali Gandaki gorge that separates it from Annapurna to the east is among the most profound river valleys on the planet. The site rates it grade 5, an extreme expedition on which climbers generally rely on supplemental oxygen; its steep, avalanche-swept faces have historically placed it among the more dangerous of the 8,000-metre peaks.
