Mt. Meru via Momella Route — September 2023 Summit Report

September is Meru's finest month: dry skies, a clear view of Kilimanjaro at Socialist Peak, and far fewer trekkers than its famous neighbor. The armed ranger required for wildlife in Arusha National Park adds a dimension unlike any other African climb. Many trekkers use Meru as Kilimanjaro acclimatization — at 4,566m it earns that role. The crater rim traverse is the highlight: narrow, exposed, and memorable.

Difficulty Assessment

Technically moderate but the crater rim traverse demands focus — narrow ridge with serious exposure. The armed ranger requirement (wildlife in Arusha National Park) is mandatory and adds a memorable dimension to the experience.
