Seven days on Europe's highest peak via the south approach. Chairlift to Mir Station, acclimatization rotations, and then a wait at Garabashi Barrels for the weather window. The snowcat to Pastukhov Rocks at 4,800m is a legitimate tool — what matters is the summit, not the style points below. The Saddle between Elbrus's twin summits lives up to its wind reputation on day six. Day seven is calm: West Summit at 5,642m and the Seven Summits box checked.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Mount Elbrus (5642m) Date: July 20, 2024 Duration: 7 days Party Size: 5 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Variable conditions — warm at Azau (20°C), brutal at the Saddle (-20°C with wind chill). Summit day window between weather systems: -12°C, calm. The two-day wait at Garabashi Barrels paid off. Snow: Well-consolidated summer snowpack, Pastukhov Rocks snowcat track in good condition Temperature: -20°C to 20°C Wind: Notorious Saddle winds absent on summit day — a fortunate window
Difficulty Assessment¶
The South Route uses chairlifts and a snowcat to reduce approach effort, but the summit is a long glacier slog at 5,642m. The Saddle between the twin summits is notorious for wind exposure. Acclimatization rotations to 5,000m are essential before the summit push.
