Arthur's Seat via Radical Road — June 2023 Summit Report

The summer solstice on Arthur's Seat is an Edinburgh tradition. We walked from Holyrood Palace along the Radical Road — the path beneath the dramatic basalt columns of Salisbury Crags — before scrambling up the final volcanic cone. From the summit, the entire city of Edinburgh lay below: the castle, the Forth bridges, the Pentland Hills, and the shimmering Firth of Forth. A perfectly timed city hike requiring no equipment and rewarding with a genuine sense of wild landscape in the middle of a capital city.

Difficulty Assessment

The Radical Road path along Salisbury Crags involves some rough ground and brief scrambling on the final summit cone, but nothing technical. The steep grassy slope on the direct approach can be slippery when wet.
