The Annapurna Sanctuary is one of the world's great natural amphitheatres, and arriving at Base Camp (4,130m) surrounded by the semicircle of Annapurna, Machapuchare, and Gangapurna is a moment of pure awe. We trekked in via Ghorepani for the Poon Hill rhododendron season, then dropped through Chhomrong into the Sanctuary gorge. The approach above Deurali was dusted with fresh April snow. ABC itself was cold, wild, and humbling — the Annapurna massif rising 3,000m above our tent. A trekking journey that rewards patience.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Annapurna (8091m) Date: April 08, 2022 Duration: 10 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Variable — warm in Chhomrong (20°C), light snowfall above Deurali. Base camp clear morning, building clouds by noon. -5°C at ABC. Snow: Light fresh snow on the Sanctuary approach above 3,500m. Compacted on the path. Temperature: -5°C to 20°C Wind: Light within the Sanctuary bowl; stronger on the ridgelines above
Difficulty Assessment¶
The sustained day-after-day commitment of 10 days of trekking, the altitude at ABC, and the narrow gorge approach through avalanche terrain above Hinku Cave are the main challenges. Teahouse logistics and TIMS permits require advance planning.
