The highest point of the Hindu Kush, Tirich Mir reaches 7,708 metres in the Chitral district of northwestern Pakistan, west of the Karakoram. Towering over the town of Chitral, it caps a range that stretches on into Afghanistan and dominates the valleys at its foot. First climbed in 1950, it is a fold mountain raised along the Hindu Kush axis. The site classifies it grade 5, its most severe tier, reflecting a high and committing ascent. Its standing as the culminating summit of an entire range lends it prominence out of proportion to its modest fame, and it is only occasionally attempted.
