Gambaran medan
Lihat gunung →The Machame Route — nicknamed the 'Whiskey Route' — is Kilimanjaro's most scenic and second-most-popular path to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). This 7-day itinerary provides an extra acclimatization day over the standard 6-day option, significantly improving summit-success rates. The route traverses all five of Kilimanjaro's ecological zones: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit plateau. The Barranco Wall scramble on Day 4 is the technical highlight.

Kilimanjaro 7-Day Machame Route Expedition¶
The most scenic 7-day route to Kilimanjaro's Uhuru Peak with an extra acclimatization day via the dramatic Machame corridor.
Overview¶
The Machame Route — nicknamed the 'Whiskey Route' — is Kilimanjaro's most scenic and second-most-popular path to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp¶
Register at Machame Gate and enter the dense montane rainforest. The trail climbs steadily through towering Hagenia trees dripping with lichen, with colobus monkeys often heard overhead. Camp is reached above the cloud layer with the first clear summit views.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp¶
A shorter but steeper day ascending from the rainforest into the high moorland. The landscape transitions dramatically as heathers replace trees. Shira Camp sits on the ancient Shira Plateau with unobstructed views of the Kibo peak.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp¶
The key acclimatization day: climb high to the Lava Tower at 4,630m for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960m — the classic 'walk high, sleep low' strategy. Lava Tower is a geological curiosity, a massive volcanic plug rising from the alpine desert. The descent into the Great Barranco Valley is dramatic and otherworldly.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp¶
The Barranco Wall — a 250m near-vertical scramble — is the day's centrepiece and the most hands-on section of any Kilimanjaro route. Despite the intimidating appearance, fixed holds and a well-worn path make it accessible with basic scrambling confidence. After the Wall, the trail crosses the Karanga Valley to camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp¶
A short but altitude-demanding day across the alpine desert to reach Barafu — the high camp and launch pad for the summit bid. Arrive by early afternoon to eat, hydrate, and rest before the midnight start. Summit briefing with your guide covers the route, turn-back policy, and signs of altitude illness.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp¶
The summit day. Depart at midnight on loose scree and ash, aiming for Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at dawn. From Stella Point continue 45 minutes along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp through the afternoon.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate¶
A straightforward descent back through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail is wide and the pace is fast. Summit certificates are issued at the gate by park rangers — Uhuru certificates for those who reached the top, Stella Point certificates for those who reached the crater rim.
