Mt. Kenya sits precisely on the equator yet carries glaciers and technical alpine terrain. The Sirimon Route from the north offered a gradual acclimatisation over two days to Shipton's Camp (4,200m). The 4 AM summit push to Point Lenana traversed snow and ice as the sky lightened — a scramble rather than a walk, demanding confidence on mixed ground. Arriving at the summit with Batian and Nelion's technical faces towering directly above us, and the Lewis Glacier visible below, highlighted just how much mountain there is beyond the trekking peak. The glacier has retreated significantly since photographs taken 30 years ago.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Mount Kenya (5199m) Date: February 12, 2024 Duration: 4 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Equatorial mountain weather — warm mornings (15°C), cloud buildup by noon, cold nights at high camps (-8°C). Heavy frost on tent at Shipton's Camp. Snow: Snow and ice patches on the summit scramble to Point Lenana. Ice axe useful. Temperature: -8°C to 15°C Wind: Light morning winds; afternoon 20–30 km/h with chill factor
Difficulty Assessment¶
Point Lenana (4,985m) involves a pre-dawn scramble on mixed ground (rock and ice) — poles are insufficient; an ice axe is strongly recommended in February. Altitude is serious: 3,000m of elevation-gain/" class="glossary-link" title="Elevation Gain">elevation gain over three days from Sirimon Gate requires respect. Batian and Nelion (true summits) require full technical gear.
