Jungfrau via Monchsjoch Hut — August 2021 Summit Report¶

The Bernese Oberland's most elegant summit arrived at via one of the Alps' most unusual approaches: the Jungfraujoch railway at 3,454m. The Monchsjoch Hut removes the altitude approach — what remains is still a serious alpine climb. The 45-degree ice slope above the Rottalsattel separates the trekkers from the alpinists. The corniced summit ridge of the Jungfrau at 4,158m, with the Eiger's North Face filling the eastern skyline, is one of the Alps' finest moments.

Difficulty Assessment¶

The Jungfraujoch railway reduces approach time but the Jungfrau still demands glacier travel, a 45-degree ice slope, and a narrow corniced summit ridge. The approach through the Monchsjoch Hut is well-established but the technical sections are unforgiving.
