Shishapangma is the fourteenth and lowest of the eight-thousanders, its summit reaching 8,027 metres, and the only one of the fourteen lying entirely within China, in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Its position north of the main Himalayan crest kept it closed to foreign climbers until 1964, when a Chinese team made the first ascent, the last of the 8,000-metre peaks to be climbed. A Himalayan fold mountain, it carries the site's grade 4 rating. Because a common route ends at a slightly lower central summit, reaching the true main top adds a corniced, exposed traverse that has caught out several parties over the years.
