Jannu, known in Nepal as Kumbhakarna, rises to 7,711 metres in the Kangchenjunga section of the eastern Himalaya. Famed for the sheer, overhanging granite of its north face, it is one of the most technically celebrated peaks of its height, and its difficult 1962 first ascent and later hard routes stand as milestones in Himalayan climbing. It is a fold mountain, uplifted where the Indian and Eurasian plates meet. The site rates it grade 5, its most demanding classification. Lower than the eight-thousanders nearby, Jannu is prized for the steepness and quality of its climbing rather than for altitude, and it attracts accomplished alpinists rather than crowds.
