Nevado Mismi — Source of the Amazon — June 2023 Summit Report

Nevado Mismi holds the distinction of being the ultimate source of the Amazon River — the longest river in the world begins as a trickle of meltwater from this mountain. Our trek combined the summit with a visit to the Amazon source marker on the western slopes. The high-altitude desert landscape of the Colca Canyon region provides stunning backdrop. Condors soared above us during the entire approach.

Technically straightforward — a high-altitude hike over volcanic terrain. The main challenge is altitude and remoteness. The approach from Chivay requires arranging local transport.
