Tongariro Alpine Crossing — December 2023 Report

New Zealand's most famous one-day walk lives up to its reputation in December summer conditions. The shuttle dropped us at Mangatepopo at 8 AM — early enough to avoid the worst crowds. The South Crater plateau offered the first sense of volcanic grandeur, but it was the Red Crater that stopped us in our tracks: a rust-red, steaming gash in the earth, its fumaroles venting at the highest point of the crossing. Below, the Emerald Lakes glowed an impossible blue-green in the summer light. The descent to Ketetahi was long and knee-testing. An extraordinary geological experience.

Trip Overview

Mountain: Mount Tongariro (1978m) Date: December 16, 2023 Duration: 1 days Party Size: 5 Outcome: Summit

Conditions

Weather: Summer conditions, 20°C at start, 8°C at Red Crater. Strong wind at the saddle between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe — forced careful footing. Snow: No snow on the crossing route. Steam venting from Red Crater fumaroles. Temperature: 8°C to 20°C Wind: Gusty 40–50 km/h at the Tongariro-Ngauruhoe saddle

Difficulty Assessment

The crossing is linear and shuttle-dependent — logistics require advance planning. The Red Crater scramble involves steep scree and is the only technically challenging section. Volcanic alert levels must be checked before departure; closures are possible at short notice.
