Fitz Roy via Laguna de los Tres — March 2024 Trek Report

Waiting in El Chaltén pays off on March 2 with the rarest of gifts: a windless, perfectly clear Patagonian day. The reflection of Fitz Roy's granite towers in Laguna de los Tres is one of South America's defining views. The final moraine scramble earns it. By 2 PM the clouds close back in — the mountain revealing itself for just long enough to remind you why people come here and wait.

Difficulty Assessment

The day hike to Laguna de los Tres is strenuous (steep moraine to the laguna) but non-technical. The technical summit of Fitz Roy itself is Grade 5+. Timing the weather window from El Chaltén is the real challenge — some trekkers wait days for a clear moment.
