The Owen Stanley Range runs 320km along the spine of Papua New Guinea's mainland, reaching 4,509m at Mount Wilhelm. This rugged range is cloaked in tropical montane forest and was the site of the brutal Kokoda Track campaign in 1942. Village-based trekking supports local communities.
