Near the head of the Baltoro Glacier in the Karakoram of Pakistan, Chogolisa forms a long, snow-draped ridge of 7,665 metres crowned by twin summits. It is remembered in climbing history as the peak where the Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl lost his life in 1957, after breaking through a summit cornice. A Karakoram fold mountain, its graceful lines belie serious objective hazard on the approach and upper slopes. The site rates it grade 5, its most severe classification. Though not among the very highest of the range, it remains a committing and infrequently climbed objective within the Baltoro's great amphitheatre of peaks.
