Climbing Fuji on Obon weekend means sharing Japan's most iconic mountain with thousands of fellow pilgrims. We ascended the Yoshida trail — the classic Kawaguchiko approach — staying overnight at a 8th station hut. The 1 AM summit push in headlamp light was surreal: a headlamp chain stretching up into the darkness above, prayer bells, and the thin air of 3,400m. We arrived at the crater rim just before dawn and watched the goraiko — the sacred sunrise — paint the clouds below pink and gold. Descending the bulldozer path, we reflected that Fuji is more pilgrimage than mountain climb. It earns its reputation.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Mount Fuji (3776m) Date: August 11, 2023 Duration: 2 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Clear at start, clouds rolled in at 8th station. Summit morning was cold (-2°C) but beautifully clear for the goraiko sunrise. Snow: No snow on Yoshida route in August. Volcanic gravel throughout. Temperature: -2°C to 22°C (summit to 5th station) Wind: Calm at start; gusty 30–40 km/h on summit crater rim
Difficulty Assessment¶
Altitude is the main challenge — the 2,000m of ascent from the 5th station can bring on acute mountain sickness in those who ascend too quickly. The path is well-defined and crowded; the main skill required is pacing. The overnight hut experience adds a layer of cold-weather management.
