Mt. Elbrus via South Route — July 2024 Summit Report¶

Seven days on Europe's highest peak via the south approach. Chairlift to Mir Station, acclimatization rotations, and then a wait at Garabashi Barrels for the weather window. The snowcat to Pastukhov Rocks at 4,800m is a legitimate tool — what matters is the summit, not the style points below. The Saddle between Elbrus's twin summits lives up to its wind reputation on day six. Day seven is calm: West Summit at 5,642m and the Seven Summits box checked.

The two-day wait at Garabashi Barrels paid off. Difficulty Assessment¶

The South Route uses chairlifts and a snowcat to reduce approach effort, but the summit is a long glacier slog at 5,642m. The Saddle between the twin summits is notorious for wind exposure. Acclimatization rotations to 5,000m are essential before the summit push.
