Mount Wilhelm via Summit Trail — August 2022 Summit Report

Mount Wilhelm is one of the most remote summit experiences on Earth. Three days of trekking through Papua New Guinea's cloud forests — past tribal villages, across moss-draped ridges, and through waist-high alpine grass — lead to the highest point in Oceania (excluding Indonesian Papua). The pre-dawn summit push revealed both the Bismarck Sea and the southern lowlands. Our porters from Keglsugl village made the trip possible and memorable.

Trip Overview

Mountain: Mount Wilhelm (4509m) Date: August 05, 2022 Duration: 3 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit

Conditions

Weather: Dry season in PNG — relatively stable. Cloud forest was misty as always but the summit poked above clouds at dawn. Snow: No permanent snow. Occasional frost above 4,000m. Temperature: 0°C to 22°C Wind: Light to moderate, humid air

Difficulty Assessment

Papua New Guinea's highest peak. The approach from Keglsugl involves trekking through cloud forest and alpine grassland. The trail is muddy and remote. Porters from local communities are essential. The summit ridge is exposed with steep drops on both sides.
