Mount Hood via South Side — May 2022 Summit Report

Oregon's iconic volcano is the most-climbed glaciated peak in North America. The midnight start from Timberline Lodge, the steady crunch of crampons on frozen snow, the sulfur smell from the summit fumaroles — Hood delivers a complete mountaineering experience in a single day. The key is timing: too early in season and the crevasses are hidden, too late and rockfall in the Pearly Gates becomes unmanageable.

Trip Overview

Mountain: Mount Hood (3426m) Date: May 14, 2022 Duration: 1 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit

Conditions

Weather: Clear and cold. Pre-dawn start from Timberline Lodge under starry skies. Sunrise on the Hogsback was spectacular. Snow: Firm spring snow, transitioning to corn by 10 AM. Bergschrund partially open. Temperature: -8°C to 5°C Wind: Moderate 15-25 km/h, gusty near the Pearly Gates

Difficulty Assessment

The South Side route involves glacier travel, a steep climb up the Hogsback, and a squeeze through the Pearly Gates — a narrow chute between fumaroles. Rockfall in the chute is a real danger, especially after sunrise. Early season (May) offers the safest conditions.
