Aconcagua via Normal Route — January 2024 Summit Report

Eighteen days on the Normal Route of the Western Hemisphere's highest peak. Aconcagua demands patience: acclimatization rotations, a week at Plaza de Mulas, and then waiting for the viento blanco to relent. Summit day arrives calm and cold at -18°C — the Canaleta is earned, not given. Standing on 6,962m with the Andes spreading to every horizon, Aconcagua's reputation as a Seven Summits stepping stone suddenly feels earned.

Conditions

Weather: Andes summer — hot at Confluencia (28°C), brutal wind at Camp 3 (-25°C with wind chill). Summit day: surprisingly calm, -18°C, clear sky. A narrow window between viento blanco systems. Snow: Hard-packed snow on upper mountain, Canaleta heavily wind-loaded Temperature: -25°C to 28°C Wind: Variable — calm at lower camps, severe at Camp 3 during storm days

Difficulty Assessment

Non-technical on the Normal Route but the altitude at 6,962m is the real challenge. The viento blanco (white wind) can pin expeditions for days. The Canaleta is the punishing final loose scree gully — technical at sea level, exhausting above 6,500m.
