Topographic contour map of Mount Elgon (4321m)

Mount Elgon (4,321m) straddles the Uganda-Kenya border and is an ancient shield volcano with the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, measuring 8km across. The Sasa Trail on the Ugandan side is the most direct route to Wagagai, the highest summit on the caldera rim. The 4-day itinerary ascends from the park gate (2,380m) through montane forest, bamboo, giant heather, and afro-alpine moorland to the caldera rim camps. The descent follows the Piswa Trail for a satisfying loop. UWA park fees and a guide hired at Budadiri are required. The mountain is gentler than Kenya's Aberdares and offers a more remote, less-trafficked experience than other East African peaks.

Day 1: Budadiri Gate to Sasa Hut

Start at Budadiri and drive to the park gate, then hike through dense montane forest with colobus monkeys and mountain hornbills. The bamboo zone transitions to giant heather above 3,000m. Sasa Hut provides a basic metal shelter with stunning views back over the Kapchorwa escarpment.

Day 2: Sasa Hut to Caldera Rim Camp

Climb through the afro-alpine moorland of giant lobelias and senecios onto the caldera rim. First views of the immense 8km-wide caldera floor open up dramatically. Camp on the rim with sweeping views into the caldera and across to Kenya.

Day 3: Caldera Rim to Wagagai Summit and Piswa Camp

Traverse the caldera rim to Wagagai Peak (4,321m) — the highest point in Uganda and on the volcano. The caldera walk offers sweeping views into the ancient crater floor with its lakes and old fumarole zones. Descend to Piswa Hut for the final overnight.

Descend the Piswa Trail through afro-alpine moorland, bamboo, and montane forest to Piswa Gate — completing the satisfying Sasa-Piswa loop. Return transport to Mbale or Kampala.
